A Dog Park on Key Biscayne
February 11, 2010
Our Village Council recently voted against establishing a Dog Park on the north end of the Village Green. While this is unfortunate, I am encouraged that their reasoning involved location and not the notion of a Dog Park itself.
I recently established a pet service business and have had the privilege of meeting and getting to walk quite a few dogs within our community. This experience has enlightened me to the fact that no facility within Key Biscayne exists where owners can allow their dogs to run and play freely with other canines.
There are a number of benefits to having a Dog Park on Key Biscayne ones that can have a positive and direct impact on dogs, dog owners and our community as a whole.
First, Dog Parks allow dogs to exercise and socialize safely with dogs and people they may or may not know. This allows dogs to become well-socialized, less aggressive and react well to strangers. In this case good physical health lends to good mental health.
Second, Dog Parks enable dog owners to socialize. This fosters a sense of community by allowing owners to relax, converse and also to talk about issues or problems they may be experiencing with their pets and to identify possible solutions.
Third, Dog Parks improve community by promoting public health and safety. Well-exercised dogs are better neighbors who are less likely to create a nuisance, bark excessively and destroy property.
For these reasons and more, it is my hope that another suitable location can be found for a Dog Park in Key Biscayne. Dog Parks offer more than just room to roam for our furry four-legged friends. They provide quality of life not just for dogs but for humans as well.
